The adventures of Paul and Stephanie aboard the MV Infinite Sea.

Monthly Archives: February 2014

We continue to work almost daily to get the boat ready, my dallying in posting is probably letting a lot of the lesser projects (like curtains) fall thru the cracks in getting recorded.

Three major projects crossed off the to do list: batteries, rear enclosure, and anchor(s).

Ever since our sea trial we have been plagued with bouts of engine non-startitis. The batteries were less than a year old, so it was hard to come to grips with the need to replace them. However, we would like to be able to spend a night on the hook and still have some electrical function, so we had the experts out. Turns out that while the batteries had been newish, the charger was vintage and was literally frying the batteries. The upshot was a whole new set. We upgraded to AGM type batteries which will not require water fill, ever, and a 50amp charger with a brain which should charge as needed. Can’t wait to try the system out on the hook. Did try starting the boat this week and for once both engines started right up.

Canvas was in the works since October and finally finished toward the end of January. It has turned the back deck into another room and allowed us a few additional sunset dinners. It also changes the look of the boat, doesn’t it?

We had two new anchors mounted and ready to go, having changed out the smallish Delta anchor for a CRQ and adding a Fortress recommended for a boat our size. That is until Paul saw a giant Fortress anchor on Tom Conrad’s boat, True North and read that it is advisable to use anchors sized above that recommended. So, Paul found a used Fortress probably twice the size of the old.

We also got the boat set up for two anchors, which involved adding a second mounting bracket and dividing the anchor locker. It was good that in this process we tested out the windlass to be sure it raised the anchor and inspected the line and chain.

Jobs in progress: replacing eisenglass in the bridge which is no longer completely transparent, (this was derailed by visit of the canvas guys and rainy weather), installation of autopilot and AIS, canvas work, new elongated, semi-vacuum flush head and baby proofing for the upcoming visit of our grandchildren. Many more small jobs remain in addition to reading as much as possible to get familiar with the journey and plan stops not to be missed on this trip of a lifetime.
